GISEC Inspire - Women in Cyber

Disparity between genders in the workforce has been detrimental, but research shows that increasing diversity is not only good for the company, but the economy as a whole. In fact, a whopping $28 trillion to the economy as a new report by McKinsey & Co. found full gender equality would add 26%, or $28 trillion, to global gross domestic product in 2025.

There is approximately 4.07 million unfilled cybersecurity positions in the world to date. Diversity, or there lack of, is a direct link to this figure. Women are dramatically underrepresented in the cybersecurity space, as they make up a mere 20% of the workforce globally and only 5% in the Middle East region alone. Without a plan to grow the cybersecurity workforce to include women, prominent businesses and government agencies will become increasingly vulnerable.

GISEC Inspire brings together cybersecurity companies, government and big thinkers to promote methods to bring women into the cybersecurity field.

Improved gender diversity is well documented to improve the effectiveness of leadership teams. The notion that teams reflecting gender diversity demonstrate better results, is no longer debatable in business; the International Monetary Fund found that women’s participation on bank and regulatory board’s increases financial stability, or peace agreements in which women were active agents are significantly more durable over time. With headlines across the world highlighting cyber-attacks on government agencies, political campaign offices, financial institutions and big corporations, has the lack of diversity a national security issue as cybercrimes continue to escalate? Are women who represent a highly skilled and under-tapped resource paramount to cybersecurity’s future?
